Get up to speed on Hyundai EVs
Driving an EV for the first time can be a bit stressful, but we’re here to provide you with some helpful tips and resources to make the transition as smooth as possible. Our goal is to make it easy for you learn to charge and drive your new car. The best news? Hyundai makes excellent electric vehicles.
-
Level 1 charging: If you're using a standard 120V household outlet, try to use a dedicated 15-amp plug. This ensures that your car charges efficiently without being slowed down by other devices on the same circuit. You can expect to add back between 20 and 30 miles of range overnight with this method.
Level 2 charging: If you have a 240V outlet available, it can fully recharge your battery from 0 to 100% in about six to nine hours. You can buy a wall-mounted or portable Level 2 charger or ask Evee for a local installer recommendation.
Energy rates: A major benefit of EVs is that they save money on gas, but only if you charge at the right time. Use the EV settings in your car or the BlueLink app to set your off-peak charging times. You may also qualify for an EV-specific rate.
-
Apps to download: PlugShare will show you nearly every available charging station. Be sure to filter by compatible plug types.
Road tripping: Planning a long drive? Plan your charging stops! Use PlugShare to find charge points along your route. You can also search for charging stations while driving in the Hyundai navigation
Battery conditioning: If you intend to DC fast charge, enable “Battery Conditioning” under the EV settings and then set the charging station as your destination in the native Hyundai navigation — this well ensure you get a fast charge at high-powered chargers. You can also manually turn it on in the 2025 IONIQ 5.

Regenerative Braking: Experiment with the regenerative braking paddles behind the wheel (0-3 and i-Pedal, or hold the right paddle for Auto) to find what feels best for you. We like i-Pedal in the city and Auto for highway driving.
Auto brake hold: This feature keeps the vehicle stationary at a stop sign or red light, even if you release the brake pedal after coming to a complete stop. Turn it on or off with the button to the lower left of the steering wheel on the dashboard (IONIQ 5) or center console between the seats (all other models).
Driving modes: Using the round button on the lower left of the steering wheel, choose between Normal, Sport, and Eco. Each mode changes the steering and throttle response commensurate with the name.
-
Smart Cruise Control: This system maintains a set speed and distance from the vehicle ahead, automatically adjusting speed as necessary. It can be activated by pressing the Driving Assist button (car with speedo icon) and allows for easy speed adjustments using the + and - switches, or push the switch to pause and restart.
Highway Driving Assist (HDA): This feature helps keep the vehicle centered in its lane while maintaining a safe distance from the car in front. It works in conjunction with Smart Cruise Control and is designed for highway driving conditions. Engage it for via the steering wheel button diagonally opposite from the Smart Cruise Control button.
Auto regen: By holding the right regenerative braking paddle behind the steering wheel while at a stop or coasting, you’ll enter “Auto regen.” The vehicle will now use the radar to adjust the amount of regenerative braking based on speed and traffic conditions. You can adjust the baseline regenerative braking still using the paddles. We like this for highway driving.

If you’re thinking of buying or leasing an EV, you’ve probably heard about the $7,500 clean vehicle tax credit. At this time, no new Hyundai EV qualifies for the point-of-sale tax credit. However, Hyundai offers rebates for both purchases and leases that match or exceed $7,500 to make up for it.
And, there are other programs that literally pay you to have an EV.
